Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors
Maruti Suzuki in the list of the best performers in May 2022 sold a total of 1,24,474 copies. Maruti Suzuki is followed by Tata Motors, Hyundai and Mahindra. Tata Motors sold 1,754 more units in May 2022 than in April of the same year. In addition, Mahindra in May 2022 set a record 4,464 units higher than in April 2022.
Hyundai
Hyundai has seen a slight decline in sales since April 2022, and in May 2022, 1,708 units were sold less. But the total number of 42,293 units is almost twice the number of Hyundai sales in May 2021. MG Motors

In May 2022, Maruti Suzuki sold 16,814 Wagon R units. The best-selling car in India. Wagon R is experiencing an increase in popularity with sales growth of 2,086 units sold in May last year. Annual sales percentage growth for the Wagon R reached a massive 706%.
Tata Motors Nexon is located behind the Wagon R. With 14,641 units sold, Nexon had the best month of sales in May 2022, the highest number in a given month since its launch. Annual growth increased by 127% Nexon from the sales record in May last year.
Next on the list is Maruti Suzuki’s Swift with 14,133 units sold. Swift has once again risen to the top ten best-selling cars in India. Swift sales increased by 102% compared to last year.
They are followed by Maruti Baleno, Tata Alto, Maruti Ertiga, Maruti Dzire, Hyundai Creta, Maruti Eeko and Maruti Vitara Brezza.
Maruti Suzuki dominates the Indian car market with family-friendly, reliable models that continue to amaze buyers. Tata Motors is no exception. With new models being introduced in all segments, Tata Motors is also better in terms of sales and performance.
Foreign brands such as Kia and MG Motors are gaining the trust and popularity of Indian consumers, while other brands such as Toyota and Hyundai are retaining their status. Although Toyota and Hyundai did not reach the sales level of Tata and Maruti in particular, they performed better than the post-covid.
From the table we can see that hatchbacks dominate our market, although they are still in the trend of big SUVs. The top ten includes 4 hatchbacks, as well as 3 SUVs, 2 MPVs and 1 sedan. At the top of the list is the Wagon R – a hatchback with a compact SUV Nexon.
Under the brand, we see that Maruti Suzuki sells not only the maximum number of cars, but also the most popular models this year. In May 2022, 7 of the top 10 best-selling cars in India were Indian-Japanese carmakers. Tata is the rest of the Nexon and Alto and Hyundai Creta list.
Indian buyers seem to prefer Indian carmakers more than other brands. However, since the consumer pool is as large as ours, there is always room for other brands to leave their mark here.
