The upcoming Mahindra Thar Roxx will share its platform with the Scorpio N which is a crucial reason why it could even share the safety rating.
I believe the soon-to-be-launched Mahindra Thar Roxx could end up scoring a 5-star NCAP rating. The hypothesis is based on a simple reason that it will share the underpinnings with the 5-star rated Mahindra Scorpio N. Apart from that, we already know Mahindra’s commitment towards ensuring that all its products are highly rated when it comes to safety ratings. Right from the compact XUV3XO to the flagship XUV700, there are 5-star rated cars in Mahindra’s camp all around. Even the 3-door Thar boasts a decent 4-star rating. Hence, the Mahindra Thar Roxx has all the reasons to be a 5-star product in terms of its NCAP rating. Let us glance at the details here.
Mahindra Thar Roxx NCAP Rating
To ensure a larger body and off-roading capabilities, the Indian auto giant will build the Thar Roxx on the same platform as the Scorpio N. The latter was able to secure 29.25 points out of a possible 34 in the Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and 28.93 points out of 49 in the Child Occupant Protection (COP) categories. This translates to a 5-star rating in the AOP and a 3-star rating in the COP. Note that this model had 2 airbags, seatbelt pretensioner (front + rear), seatbelt load-limiter (front + rear), ISOFIX child seat anchorages, airbag cut-off switch, seatbelt reminder (front + rear) and UN127 and GTR9 Pedestrian protection norms as standard.
Adult Occupant Protection
In the AOP category, Scorpio N secured 12.3 points in the Frontal Offset Deformable Barrier Test and 16 points in the Side Moveable Deformable Barrier Test. The Side Pole Impact Test was rated ‘OK’. This translates to good protection for the head and neck of the driver and passenger. However, the protection for the chest of the driver and passenger was marginal. The protection for the knees of the driver and passenger was rated good. The driver’s tibias showed adequate protection and the passenger’s tibias showed adequate and marginal protection.
The footwell area was rated stable and the bodyshell was also deemed stable and capable of withstanding further loadings. In the Side Impact test, the protection for the head, chest, abdomen and pelvis was good. In the Side Pole Impact test, the curtain airbags met the fitment requirements. The pole impact test was performed in a version with side head protection airbags, showing good protection to the head, abdomen and pelvis, and weak protection to the chest. As per the Global NCAP’s latest requirements, the ESC (Electronic Stability Control) met all the fitment conditions and the performance displayed was acceptable.
Child Occupant Protection
In the COP section, the Scorpio N scored a Dynamic Score of 24 out of 24, a CRS Installation Score of 4.93 out of 12 and a Vehicle Assessment Score of 0 out of 13. The ISOFIX and i-Size seat mounts were available for an 18-month-old child and a 3-year-old child in the second row. In the Frontal Impact test, the seat for the 3-year-old was installed rearward facing using i-Size anchorages and a support leg. It was able to prevent head exposure during the front impact by offering full protection.
On the other hand, the seat for the 3-year-old was installed rearward facing with i-Size anchorages and a support leg. Again, it was able to offer full protection during the frontal impact test. In the Side Impact test, both CRSs (Child Restraint Systems) offered full side impact protection. The SUV doesn’t offer 3-point seatbelts for all seating positions. However, there is a possibility to disconnect the passenger airbag in case a rearward-facing CRS will be installed in this position. The official Global NCAP report confirms that most of the CRS installations passed for the assessed CRS.
Our View
The Mahindra Thar Roxx will launch on August 15. Looking at the details of Mahindra Scorpio N’s Global NCAP testing, it is clear that Roxx will benefit from the strengths of this platform. Additionally, it will also most likely borrow the powertrain options. In fact, it will offer the option of choosing between either a 1.5-litre turbo diesel, a 2.2-litre turbo diesel or a 2.0-litre turbo petrol mill. In comparison to the existing 3-door Thar, the power and torque figures might be slightly bumped up to compensate for the added weight. Hence, these could be somewhere around what the Scorpio N possesses. Finally, I would also like to highlight the fact that the current 3-door Mahindra Thar already boasts a decent safety rating of 4 stars at the Global NCAP. Therefore, I have no reason to believe that Mahindra would try to better that with the 5-door model. More concrete details will emerge at the launch in the coming days.
