Indian carmakers have been offering their latest vehicles with top-notch safety equipment which is what makes us proud.
On the patriotic occasion of Independence Day, we take a look at the top 5 safest Indian origin cars. India has emerged as one of the biggest automobile markets in the world in recent years. While it all commenced with foreign carmakers, Indian auto giants like Tata Motors and Mahindra also jumped on the passenger vehicle bandwagon. Today, they are the third and the fourth largest carmakers in the country in terms of monthly sales, respectively. A notable reason for their immense success in the last few years has been safety. They make some of the safest cars in our market even at affordable price points. Let us take a look at the details of the top 5 safest Indian origin cars in this post.
Top 5 Safest Indian Origin Cars
Car | Adult Occupant Protection | Child Occupant Protection |
Tata Safari | 5-star | 5-star |
Tata Harrier | 5-star | 5-star |
Mahindra XUV700 | 5-star | 4-star |
Tata Punch | 5-star | 4-star |
Mahindra Scorpio N | 5-star | 3-star |
Tata Harrier and Safari
Let us commence this list with the Tata Harrier and Safari siblings. Note that these two are essentially the same vehicles with different seating configurations. That is why they share the safety ratings. These are the flagship products in Tata Motors’ portfolio. Interestingly, they were tested on the Global NCAP with the latest protocols in 2023. In Adult Occupant Protection, the Tata Harrier and Safari scored an impressive 33.05 points out of a possible 34. This resulted in a 5-star rating. On the other hand, the Child Occupant Protection section received 45 points out of 49. Again, this qualifies as a full 5-star safety rating. In fact, this rating is highly appreciated by potential buyers and gives them yet another reason to opt for it amidst stiff competition.
Mahindra XUV700
Next up, we have the Mahindra XUV700. It was tested by the Global NCAP back in 2021. Note that it is the flagship SUV from the Indian auto giant. It comes with tons of modern amenities to pamper the customers. However, in this post, we are concerned about safety prowess. The XUV700 achieved 5 stars in the Adult Occupant Protection category. The score was a decent 16.03 out of 17. For the Child Occupant Protection section, this was 41.66 out of 49. Note that this scoring system was valid for the Global NCAP testing with old protocols. Today, the scoring system has been changed slightly and the protocols have been updated. Still, with the prevalent laws at the time, the XUV700 was a 5-star vehicle.
Tata Punch
The micro SUV making it to this list of the top 5 safest Indian origin cars is the Tata Punch. It has been an instant success in our market ever since its inception. Recognizing people’s attraction towards SUVs, the Indian auto giant launched the Punch as its most affordable SUV. It rivals the likes of the Hyundai Exter, Maruti Ignis and Citroen C3. Note that the Punch (in ICE guise) was tested by the Global NCAP back in 2021. As mentioned previously, the safety protocols were old back then in comparison to what they are today. Still, the Punch managed to secure an almost perfect 16.45 points out of 17 in the Adult Occupant Protection category and 40.89 points out of 49 in the Child Occupant Protection segment. While the former qualifies for a 5-star rating, the latter results in a 4-star rating. I must also mention that the latest Punch EV scored 31.46 points out of 32 in AOP and 45 points out of 49 in COP for a complete 5-star rating at the Bharat NCAP in June 2024.
Mahindra Scorpio N
Finally, we have the Mahindra Scorpio N on this list as well. The Scorpio N is the premium version of the Scorpio Classic which has been on sale for decades. It was launched in 2022 in India. The main highlights of this SUV include an opulent interior, the latest tech, connectivity and convenience amenities as well as powerful engine options with a dedicated 4×4 drivetrain. In the Adult Occupant Protection section, Scorpio N was able to bag a decent 29.25 score out of 34. This was sufficient to make it a 5-star product. On the other hand, in the Child Occupant Protection category, the Mahindra Scorpio N brought 28.93 points out of a possible 49. This resulted in a 3-star safety rating. In any case, the Scorpio N has gained a lot of appreciation for its safety prowess, off-roading capabilities and premium in-cabin amenities. On this proud occasion of Independence Day, writing about the top 5 safest Indian origin cars is my absolute pleasure. I believe these Indian car companies will keep on making such safe products in times to come.
