Tata Motors has launched the CURVV EV for the Indian market and we compare it with the Nexon EV to see which one suits your needs better.
Through this post, I shall bring you a thorough comparison of the newly launched Tata CURVV EV and the highest-selling EV in the country, the Tata Nexon EV. Both these are compelling products from the Indian auto giant. They are among those rare vehicles which are available in electric, petrol and diesel versions. Note that the launch of the ICE CURVV will take place on September 2. Tata Motors is the largest EV maker in the country. It has transformed almost its entire lineup of ICE cars into electric vehicles. However, the CURVV EV is the second product with a dedicated EV platform called Acti.ev. Let us delve deep into the details of these two electric cars.
Tata CURVV EV vs Tata Nexon EV – Specs and Range
Tata CURVV EV
Let us commence with the Tata CURVV EV. It comes in two variants – Curvv.ev 45 and Curvv.ev 55. These numbers represent the battery pack capacities. Hence, the CURVV EV gets a 45 kWh or a 55 kWh battery pack. At the presentation during the launch event, Tata Motors explained that the larger battery pack contains Prismatic Cells which offer a range of 585 km as per ARAI on the MIDC P1 cycle. The Indian auto giant performed internal tests to consider real-world driving scenarios and says that owners can expect 400-425 km of range on a single charge. On the other hand, the smaller battery pack is good for ARAI-claimed 502 km. In reality, one can achieve a range of around 330-350 km. In addition to that, Tata Motors mentioned that the build quality of the CURVV EV is such that it is capable of securing a full 5-star rating at the Bharat NCAP. It uses 39% High Strength Steel by weight, 13% Advanced High Strength Steel by weight and has over 45% higher torsional stiffness compared to a typical mid-size SUV.
Being an EV, aerodynamics plays a crucial role in minimizing drag resistance and increasing efficiency (and in turn, range). The CURVV EV boasts things like coupe styling, wheel inserts, LRR tyres, aero curtains, a powertrain under tray, and flush door handles to air the drag coefficient. It has a power of 167 PS which propels the coupe electric SUV from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8.6 seconds. Also, charging capabilities is a critical factor when determining the specifications of any EV. The CURVV EV can be charged from 10% to 80% in 40 minutes with a 70 kW DC fast charger. To get a range of 150 km, you just need to plug it in for 15 minutes. Despite being an SUV with a battery in the floor, the ground clearance is a handy 190 mm, while the water wading capacity is 450 mm.
Tata Nexon EV
On the other hand, the Tata Nexon EV is available in two variants – MR (Medium Range) and LR (Long Range). These represent two different battery sizes – a 30.2 kWh and a 40.5 kWh. Tata Motors claims a range of 325 km and 465 km, respectively as per the official ARAI figures. Depending on the battery size, the power and torque figures are 127 hp / 215 Nm and 143 hp / 215 Nm, respectively. Using a DC fast charger, the Nexon EV can be juiced up 10% to 100% in just 56 minutes. You can even use a 7.3 kW AC charger to charge it at home. This increases the time to 4.3 hours in the MR variant and 6 hours in the LR trim. The acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h comes up in just 8.9 seconds. It has a ground clearance of 190 mm.
