The Czech carmaker is prepping to enter the immensely crowded compact SUV segment in our market.
Skoda Kylaq, the upcoming compact SUV, was recently spotted testing on the Indian roads alongside its bigger sibling, the Kushaq. In the last couple of years, Skoda has experienced unprecedented growth in our market. In fact, India is now its largest market outside Europe. That speaks volumes about the kind of success it has achieved here. All this came about after the heavily-localized MQB A0 IN platform was created. It spawned the famed Kushaq and Slavia which dominated the sales charts like no other Skoda car before. Skoda will launch the compact SUV early next year to leverage that success further.
Skoda Kylaq Seen Alongside Kushaq
This post stems from the TechCarLand channel on YouTube. The visuals capture a heavily camouflaged SUV plying on the roads. This looks like the upcoming Kylaq compact SUV. What is even more fascinating is the fact that it came alongside the existing Kushaq at one point. At least from the breadth perspective, the two look almost similar. Of course, since the Kylaq will be a compact SUV and the Kushaq is a mid-size SUV, the length of the two will vary significantly. But the other aspects might be relatively comparable.
Even in terms of the specifications, the two will share a lot of components. This includes, first and foremost, the MQB A0 IN platform. Thereafter, the Kylaq will draw power from the same 1.0-litre TSI turbo petrol engine as the Kushaq. It will churn out a decent 115 hp and 178 Nm of peak power and torque. There will be the option of choosing between either a 6-speed manual or an automatic transmission. I don’t believe the Czech carmaker will offer the larger 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine with the compact SUV.

Our View
Skoda is planning to expand its footprint in one of its largest markets in the world. After launching the Kushaq and Slavia, they clearly understood the mindset of the Indian customers. The localization of the platform has helped them bring down the costs and offer low maintenance and ownership expenses. Hence, people have been more open to buying Skoda cars. Going forward, the brand is focusing on catering to an even wider range of potential customers. The Skoda Kylaq will go a long way in ensuring that people get a taste of what the Czech maker has to offer at much more affordable prices.
