The black edition avatars of modern cars are gaining immense traction lately which is why we see carmakers bring out these special variants
The Black Edition trim of the MG ZS EV has officially been teased. MG Motor has been in the news lately after launching the industry-first BaaS (Battery-as-a-Service). It allows car buyers to purchase the electric car and its battery separately. Initially, you will just need to pay for the vehicle. Thereafter, depending on your monthly usage, you will need to pay the battery rental. This is a great way to ease the burden off the pockets of the consumers. It remains to be seen whether buyers like this model or not. For now, let us take a look at the details of this latest case.
MG ZS EV Black Edition
The news about the Black Edition has been announced via the mgmotorin handle on Instagram. The teaser showcases the glimpses and the silhouette of the upcoming electric SUV in this distinct avatar. While it is difficult to deduce any details from this teaser, we know that traditionally, car marques de-chrome the exterior elements, and use gloss or matte black components on the outside to lend it a tough appearance. Apart from that, the interior also gets a black theme, perhaps with red stitchings to accentuate the sportiness. I don’t expect anything new either on the outside or in terms of features and in-cabin amenities.
MG ZS EV – Specs and Price
This Black Edition trim of the MG ZS EV will continue to draw power from a 50.3 kWh battery pack. The Permanent Magnet Synchronous Electric Motor generates a healthy 177 PS and 280 Nm of peak power and torque. On a single charge, the company claims a driving range of 461 km. You can juice up the battery from 0 to 80% in just 60 minutes using a 50 kW DC fast charger. On the other hand, with a 7.4 kW AC charger, you can charge the electric SUV from 0 to 100% in 8.5 hours to 9 hours. The acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h comes up in 8.9 seconds. It has a decent ground clearance of 190 mm and a boot capacity of 350 litres. The prices of the regular model range from Rs Rs 18.98 lakh and Rs 25.44 lakh, ex-showroom. Note that if you opt for the BaaS, the prices start at Rs 13.99 lakh, ex-showroom with the additional battery rental of Rs 4.5 per km. The prices of the Black Edition trim will revolve around this vicinity.

My View
We are witnessing EVs growing in number with each passing month. India is still at the nascent stage when it comes to EV adoption. However, as we are experiencing more and more models being launched frequently, the growth is rapid. MG now has three EVs in our market – ZS EV, Comet EV and the recently launched Windsor EV. Therefore, it aims to take some market share away from the industry leader, Tata Motors. It would be interesting if it is able to alter the mindset of the potential buyers with its BaaS package. I shall keep an eye out for more details of this Black Edition version of the MG ZS EV going forward.
