The black edition avatars of modern cars are gaining immense traction lately which is why we see carmakers bring out these special variants
The Black Edition trim of the MG Astor has officially been teased. MG Motor has been in the news lately after launching the industry-first BaaS (Battery-as-a-Service). It allows car buyers to purchase the electric car and its battery separately. However, its ICE lineup includes an important product in Astor. It is the mid-size SUV which rivals the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara, and many more. In essence, this has to be the most crowded market segment in India. Therefore, frequent updates are the key to keeping the vehicle fresh and desirable. Let us glance at the special edition version of the Astor.
MG Astor Black Edition
The news about the Black Edition has been announced via the mgmotorin handle on Instagram. The teaser showcases the glimpses and the silhouette of the upcoming SUV in this distinct avatar. While it is difficult to deduce any details from this teaser, we know that traditionally, car marques de-chrome the exterior elements, and use gloss or matte black components on the outside to lend it a tough appearance. Apart from that, the interior also gets a black theme, perhaps with red stitching to accentuate the sportiness. I don’t expect anything new either on the outside or in terms of features and in-cabin amenities.
MG Astor – Specs and Price
We know that MG has even launched the Black Storm versions of the Gloster and Hector recently. It wants to expand that lineup with the Astor now. Note that there will hardly be any alterations to the powertrains. Hence, it will continue to get a 1.5-litre petrol and a 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine. The former is good for 110 PS / 144 Nm, while the latter generates a decent 140 PS / 220 Nm of peak power and torque. Performing the transmission duties is either a 6-speed manual, a CVT or an automatic gearbox depending on the variant. The prices range from Rs 9.98 lakh to Rs 18.08 lakh, ex-showroom. The Black Edition will bear a slight premium over these.

My View
MG is trying to create excitement about its product in India. We know that the mid-size SUV segment is the toughest category to compete in. There are products from just about every major carmaker in India in this space. Hence, everyone needs to be on their toes to make an impact. While the sales of the Astor might not have been too encouraging, with such special variants, there are chances that the SUV will become more popular. In any case, we shall have to wait for the launch to see how well the consumers embrace it.
