Ever since the arrival of the Maruti Swift CNG, the comparisons with other rivals are warranted
In this post, we are comparing the Maruti Swift CNG and Tata Tiago CNG in terms of specs, prices, features, design and more. CNG is a technology which is getting extremely popular in large cities lately. Car buyers looking for low running costs often opt for this powertrain. Also, the infrastructure in the cities around CNG is well-developed. Therefore, there is peace of mind among customers. Also, it gives the car owners the option of switching between petrol and CNG as per the circumstances. That is a huge advantage over EVs. For now, let us take a look at the details of this comparison.
Maruti Swift CNG vs Tata Tiago CNG – Price
The Maruti Swift CNG is the latest product in our market. The largest carmaker in the country is offering it in three trims – VXi, VXi (O) and ZXi. For these, the prices range from Rs 8.20 lakh to Rs 9.20 lakh, ex-showroom. On the other hand, the Tata Tiago CNG retails between Rs 6 lakh and Rs 8.75 lakh, ex-showroom. It is available in multiple variants. Therefore, the Tiago CNG certainly has an edge over the Swift in terms of pricing in every trim.

Base Model | Rs 8.20 lakh | Rs 6 lakh |
Top Model | Rs 9.20 lakh | Rs 8.75 lakh |
Maruti Swift CNG vs Tata Tiago CNG – Specs
Maruti Swift CNG draws power from a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder naturally aspirated bi-fuel mill which produces a healthy 69.75 PS and 101.8 Nm of peak power and torque. Note that this is the new engine with the latest generation model. Performing the transmission duties is a sole 5-speed manual transmission. However, the biggest talking point about this engine is its incredible 32.85 km/kg mileage. That will be the biggest attraction for a whole lot of people who want CNG cars for their low running costs.
On the other hand, the Tata Tiago CNG also comes with a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol + CNG mill which generates a decent 73.4 PS and 95 Nm of peak power and torque. Note that the power is slightly higher than the Swift, while the torque is marginally lower. However, the critical difference lies in the transmission options. The Tiago CNG gives the buyers the option of choosing between a 5-speed manual or an AMT gearbox. This makes it one of the rare vehicles with automatic transmissions in CNG guise. The fuel economy is a remarkable 26.49 km/kg. Still, the Swift CNG has the upper hand in terms of mileage.
I must also mention that the Tata Tiago CNG uses the twin-cylinder technology. This means that there are two smaller CNG cylinders placed underneath the boot floor instead of a single large unit. This ensures that the users get access to a large space inside the boot. Until now, this was the biggest flaw of CNG cars. Thankfully, Tata Motors worked on this new technology to enhance the practicality of all its CNG cars. This could make a huge difference.

Design and Dimensions
This is where the two products differ significantly. The new-generation Swift bears quite a few modern aesthetic customizations. At the front, it gets a new LED headlamp cluster with integrated LED DRLs and a large radiator grille section. The Suzuki logo has been shifted from the grille to the lower end of the bonnet. Apart from that, the bumper looks sporty. On the sides, there are elegant alloy wheels with black side pillars and ORVMs. The rear door handle has been shifted from C-pillars to door panels. Finally, the rear profile houses LED headlamps, a roof-mounted spoiler and a contoured bumper. All in all, the Maruti Swift looks sporty.
On the other hand, the Tata Tiago has continued to bear the same appearance for a long time now. However, this is not necessarily a bad thing. The front fascia is dominated by a sleek headlamp cluster with a consistent grille section. It is underlined by a chrome belt which runs the width of the car and culminates into the headlamp. Down below, there are chunky fog lamps and a sporty black element which makes the car rugged. On the sides, it gets black B-pillars and stylized alloy wheels. The tail section is relatively humble with a regular taillamp cluster, a roof-mounted spoiler, a chrome belt on the boot lid and black cladding on the bumper. Eventually, looks are subjective.
Dimensions | Maruti Swift | Tata Tiago |
Length | 3,860 mm | 3,765 mm |
Width | 1,735 mm | 1,677 mm |
Height | 1,520 mm | 1,535 mm |

Our View
The Maruti Swift CNG and Tata Tiago CNG both have their unique selling points. On one hand, Swift is the newer of the two which is reflected in its styling and features. Also, the tag of Swift has been a household name since 2005. It is among the most successful vehicles in the country ever. It is slightly larger and more practical of the two. Finally, its mileage is something that will reel in tons of new customers. On the other hand, if you are on a strict budget and want a car with a high safety rating, going for the Tiago CNG makes a lot of sense. Therefore, the final decision rests on what you want out of the car and how much are you willing to spend. In any case, you can’t go wrong with either of these.
