Maruti Suzuki India starts sending the Fronx, its smallest SUV, to Japan. This marks the beginning of a new era as this is the first time Maruti is exporting an SUV to Japan. It sends 1,600 units in the first batch
Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) recently started exporting the Fronx to Japan. The Baleno-based crossover, which is, in fact, an ‘SUV’ for the car buyers, is being shipped to Suzuki’s domestic market from Pipavav Port in Gujarat. The first batch has over 1,600 units. With this, the Fronx becomes the first-ever made-in-India SUV to launch in Japan. The export-spec units are made at the carmakert’s Gujarat facility. It may be noted here that Suzuki enjoys a 58% stake in MSIL.
Speaking at the development, Hisashi Takeuchi, MD and CEO, Maruti Suzuki India said,“Japan is one of the most quality-conscious and advanced automobile markets in the world. Our export to Japan is a testament to Maruti Suzuki’s capability to manufacture world-class vehicles that exemplify cutting-edge technology, exceptional performance, internationally recognised safety, and quality standards,” as per Takeuchi’s statement. He even highlighted how the Fronx offers “the best of engineering and design finesse” and that it’s “a beacon of Indian auto manufacturing excellence.” Lastly, he added, “I am confident that it will be received well by Japanese customers.”
Maruti Fronx made its world debut Auto Expo 2023, and went on sale in India in April that year. In fact, it even became the fastest model to reach 1 lakh sales mark in just 10 months in India. In July 2023, the carmaker started exporting Fronx to Lat-Am, Middle East and African markets. The car has sold over 2 lakh copies in domestic and export markets since its debut.

Maruti Fronx, which has garnered success in India, is now being exported to several nations, including Japan. This is definitely a big achievement for the Indian car industry. It goes on to show how India is quickly becoming an indispensable force in the automotive world. It even shows our industry’s strong manufacturing skills. Launching a made-in-India Suzuki model in Japan proves how India has come a long way from importing Japanese auto tech. to export of locally built cars to Suzuki’s domestic market. It also shows that India can meet its own needs whilst helping the global market.
