BMW plans to build a number of electric vehicles at the assembly plant in San Luis Potosi (Mexico).
The facility was opened in 2019 and is currently under construction in the 2nd and 3rd series. It has the capacity to assemble 175,000 vehicles a year, but last year it was only 39%. Although the German automaker has not confirmed any possible EV plans for the site, unnamed sources say it will start producing next-generation electric 3-series and iX3 SUVs from 2027.
BMW has previously said on a Mexican website that it will make crossovers, but did not say which one. Automatic news notes.

In April, BMW CEO Oliver Zipse said, “Mexico will play an important role in our full installation.” “At the same time, you will see models X, because the market demand is very high. That’s all I can say right now. “
If the Mexican plant really starts producing 3-series and iX3 electric cars in 2027, it may be the company’s first center for the production of special electric cars.
The upcoming Electric 3 Series will be one of many models based on BMW’s upcoming Neue Klasse electric vehicle architecture. The platform is aimed at the premium mid-size segment and will be the mainstay of BMW’s sales of 2 million electric vehicles by 2025 and half of new car sales by 2030 from EVs.
BMW relies heavily on the Neue Klasse platform. In fact, the Zipse brand recently announced that it aims to save 30% on costs by using cylindrical cells, as well as using new battery chemistry and cell formats to increase power consumption. Neue Klasse-based models are expected to be as efficient as the company’s ICE cars.
