MG has introduced an unusual pricing strategy for the Windsor EV where the costs of the vehicle and battery are separate
I shall delve deep into the details of the unique pricing strategy associated with MG Windsor EV. It is the latest electric vehicle in the country. With this, MG has expanded its footprint in the country. Note that it already sells ZS EV and Comet EV here. However, the Windsor EV is a 4.3-m-long electric crossover with unique pricing. The prices of the vehicle start at Rs 9.99 lakh, ex-showroom. On top of that, you can rent the battery at Rs 3.5 per km of usage. This is called BaaS (Battery as a Service). Nevertheless, there are some specific details about the costs which we would like to share.
3 Things About MG Windsor EV Nobody Told You About
Multiple Pricing Option
You must already know about the Rs 3.5 per km package. Under this scheme, there is a minimum monthly rental which is calculated by considering 1,500 km as the base distance covered. This will be levied regardless of whether you drive it or not. However, what you might not know is that there are 4 plans to choose from depending on your usage. Some of these don’t even have the requirement of minimum usage. Hence, if you go to the dealership, you can enquire about the plan which makes the most sense for your situation.
Purchase Car and Battery Together
Even though, at present, the price of the vehicle is announced without the battery, you will get to know the cost of the car with the battery in a week. This will be the option for those who don’t want to go through the hassle of paying for the battery every month. If you know that you will own the EV for a long time and drive it often, you might as well buy the battery upfront. Obviously, this option is for those who have a flexible budget, to begin with.
What Happens You Don’t Fail to Pay Battery Rent?
Now you might ask that since you are paying per month according to the usage afterwards, what if you miss your payment or default. Well, in that case, MG can take away your car and offer you a price which is prevalent in the used car market. Note that they will deduct the payment which you owe them first. Therefore, you have to make sure that you go through the calculation process carefully during the time of purchase and know how much you will have to shell out every month so that such a scenario never crops up.
Our View
MG is trying to popularize the BaaS in India. It will ease the burden off the shoulders of the car buyers at the time of purchase. That could potentially be a huge factor in pursuing the fence-sitters about EVs. They get a large car with tons of space inside due to the skateboard architecture and numerous tech and convenience features at the price of a compact SUV in the ICE realm. We just have to wait to see how well the customers embrace it.
