Indian roads are full of pleasant and unpleasant surprises but this latest case certainly belongs to the former category
A swanky Cadillac Escalade was recently spotted with an imposing road presence on the streets of India. I have reported many instances of eminent vehicles imported from other countries into India. This mostly happens in the southern part of our country. This is due to the proximity to the ports. Also, there is something known as the Carnet ATA. It is, essentially, a passport for the vehicles. Using this, people living abroad can import cars to India without paying exorbitant duties for a certain duration of time. That is how we see so many foreign cars in India.
Cadillac Escalade Seen in India
The details of this post emerge from supercars_bangalore_ on Instagram. The visuals capture the entire chain of sequence quite vividly. A white-coloured new Cadillac Escalade is plying on the streets of Bangalore. In fact, the caption of this post mentions that this is the “Big Daddy”. I can’t disagree with this statement. It is towering over most regular cars on the road. What is quite hilarious is that this ginormous SUV is making its way through the narrow city streets. There is so much traffic around. Clearly, the owner of the SUV only wants to make his/her presence felt.
In the last couple of years, Indians living abroad, particularly in the Middle East, have used the route of Carnet ATA. With that, they have imported luxury cars to India and driven them across the country. In general, you are allowed to drive an imported car in a new country for 1 year without paying high import duties. Hence, owners often take their cars back before this ATA permit expires. In this manner, they are able to experience it on the Indian roads without actually having the need to own it here.
Our View
For car enthusiasts like myself, this presents a great opportunity to witness some of the most well-renowned cars in the world on the streets of India. This creates a lot of excitement on the otherwise familiar roads with the same models which we have been watching for decades. I would like to come across more such cases in times to come. Let us keep an eye out for more such instances.
