Humvee Seen on Mumbai Streets – Massive Road Presence

RC Verma

Humvee is an iconic innovation in the world of automobile engineering which has its roots in military applications but was subsequently exposed to the masses.

A colossal Humvee was recently spotted plying on Mumbai roads. Humvee came into existence in 1985 primarily for military usage. Being one of the most rugged vehicles of its time, it later spawned the ultra-luxurious Hummer series of SUVs which were often found in the garages of some of the top celebrities on the planet. Even in India, many top cricketing and Bollywood stars had the Hummer. But finding one today is rather uncommon as the American auto giant stopped making it around 2010. Currently, the electric Hummer is on sale in the US.

Humvee on Mumbai Streets

The detailed visuals come to us courtesy of lens.craftedd on Instagram. The video clip captures a mammoth vintage Humvee roaming around on the streets of Mumbai. Even though Mumbai is a city where celebrities and opulent vehicles are common, something like this is still rare. The driver is sitting comfortably in this gargantuan SUV/jeep with open doors. In fact, a Tata Punch is seen just behind the Humvee. It is quite surprising to see just how piddly it looks in comparison to the Humvee. The imposing SUV bears the military colour theme and no non-sense exterior.

In fact, the exterior has been stripped down completely. What we are left with is an ultra-utilitarian SUV with bare minimum components. There are no windows on the sides or back. The rear section contains basic seats while everything else has been taken out. The area behind the second row is empty which is to be used as a cargo bed. I particularly love the rugged bumpers which are compact. The tyres bear the old school design but are high profile to ensure the utmost comfort irrespective of which terrain you take it to. The lights at the front and rear are vintage and there are no attempts to modernize it even a little.

Military Humvee

The Humvee was created to aid the war efforts of the USA. It is an HMMWV (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle) which was a crucial part of significant events in history like the Cold War, the Persian Gulf War, the Somali Civil War, the 1992 Los Angeles Riots, the Global War on Terrorism, the Iraq War, War in Afghanistan, Syrian Civil War, Mexican Drug War, Russo-Ukraine War, etc. It is used as an armoured vehicle to mount weapons for military combat. In addition to that, it can also be used as an unarmoured vehicle to carry troops and supplies to far-flung areas and regions of the world. Initially, it was created to replace the famed Willy MB Jeep. We finally experienced the Hummer series as luxury SUVs in the 2000s. Many countries across the globe came up with replicas of the Humvee in later years.

Our View

Spotting rare vehicles gives us an excuse to delve into the history of these cars. With that, we get an opportunity to see how far we have come. Also, this represents the technological advancements in the field of automotive engineering over the years. I find it immensely intriguing when a car company has to make a vehicle for a specific use. That is when they have to think out of the box to create something truly remarkable. The Humvee is a prime example of that. We shall keep an eye out for more such cases.
