Mahindra Thar Roxx and the Scorpio N are off-roaders but still offer two distinct personalities to the buyers.
In this post, we are comparing the Mahindra Thar Roxx to the Scorpio N in terms of specs, prices, features, design and more. Roxx is the 5-door version of the regular Thar. It is the latest launch from the Indian auto giant. The Thar Roxx was being tested for a long time. Finally, we have it in the flesh and the bookings will commence from October 3 and the deliveries will start from Dussehra. On the other hand, the Scorpio N is already a successful moniker in our market. It has been selling like hotcakes ever since its inception. Both these possess decent off-roading characteristics. Let us compare the two to help you make up your mind.
Mahindra Thar Roxx vs Scorpio N – Specs Comparison
The Mahindra Thar Roxx comes with petrol, diesel, manual, automatic, RWD and 4×4 configurations. This makes it clear that the Indian auto giant is aiming for the widest possible range of potential buyers to have an interest in the Thar Roxx. The powertrain options include a 2.0-litre mStallion direct injection turbo petrol mill which produces 162 PS / 330 Nm with the 6-speed manual and 177 PS / 380 Nm with the 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. On the other hand, buyers can even opt for the 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine which generates a healthy 152 PS / 330 Nm with the 6-speed manual or 175 PS / 370 Nm of peak power and torque with the 6-speed automatic. At present, Mahindra says that the 4×4 configuration will only be available with the diesel variants.
The main highlight of the new Mahindra Thar Roxx is the next M-Glyde platform. It is designed for better crash protection. We know that Mahindra takes the safety ratings very seriously. Apart from that, to maintain great ride comfort regardless of the kind of terrain one takes it to, the Roxx gets Frequency Dependent Damping (FDD) shock absorbers with penta-link rear suspension and an independent double-wishbone front suspension. The top trim even gets CrawlSmart and IntelliTurn Assist for better manoeuvring capabilities. The water wading capacity is 650 mm while the approach, breakover and departure angles are 41.7-degree, 23.9-degree and 36.1-degree, respectively. Clearly, the focus on hardcore off-roading abilities is unmissable.
Interestingly, the Mahindra Scorpio N also comes with petrol, diesel, manual, automatic, 4×2 and 4×4 versions. Again, this ensures that the needs of all sorts of customers are met. The Scorpio N comes with either a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder mStallion turbo petrol mill which belts out a mammoth 200 hp and 380 Nm or a 2.2-litre 4-cylinder mHawk turbo diesel engine which is available in two variants – 132 PS / 300 Nm or 175 PS / 400 Nm of peak power and torque. Again, performing transmission duties is either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. It gets the Frequency Selective Damping and the same suspension system as the Thar Roxx. Also, the hardcore 4XPLOR technology enables unparalleled adventurous capabilities.

Our View
While choosing between these two can be quite confusing for some, I believe both these SUVs have their distinct applications. Those who want a hardcore off-roader and will go on treacherous tracks often should opt for the Mahindra Thar Roxx. The SUV is specifically built for that purpose. On the other hand, those who go for such excursions rarely and want a largely urban SUV for family travels can opt for the Scorpio N. Sure, we have to wait for the final prices of the Thar Roxx. Still, I feel it will be in the vicinity of the Scorpio N. Hence, the final decision will depend on your individual use case. In any case, you can’t go wrong with either of these capable propositions.
